Can I Get Mounjaro For Weight Loss From My GP?
Mounjaro is a new medicine that can help people lose weight. Right now, only some people can get it from the NHS.
You can’t get it from your GP yet.
A special service is being made to help the people who need it most. However, this new service won’t be available by June 2025.
To get Mounjaro, you must be overweight with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more (or 37.5 or more if you’re of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean origin) and have 4 or more of these health conditions:
- type 2 diabetes mellitus
- high blood pressure (hypertension)
- heart disease (cardiovascular disease)
- obstructive sleep apnoea
- abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)
or have at least 1 of these conditions and you need to lose weight urgently for life-saving treatment, such as cancer treatment or organ transplant surgery.
If you meet all these rules, your GP can refer you to a special weight loss clinic. The medication cannot be started by the GP.
If you don’t meet the rules, the NHS can’t give you Mounjaro right now.
