Outpatient Medication
Hospital Outpatient Medication Requests: What to Expect
GPs cannot issue new medicines without a clinic or discharge letter from the hospital explaining the treatment plan.
- Hospitals must send this letter within 7 days, but it often takes longer.
- Urgent medicines should be provided by the hospital for at least 7 days or until the GP receives the letter.
- If hospital staff say the GP should prescribe without a letter, this is not safe. You can ask them to contact us directly.
- To get your letter faster, call the hospital switchboard and ask for the department.
