Latest! Stockwell Health & Wellbeing Forum: A Thriving Stockwell
Recent meetings of the Stockwell Forum have been full of energy. A new Stockwell Health & Wellbeing forum has brought many local partners together with a clear shared desire to connect and work more closely with the idea of uniting around the concept of a “Thriving Stockwell”.
The important thing now is how we build on the momentum and bring together some of the opportunities that were formulating. If you were unable to attend our last event, you are very welcome to join us at this one.
If you and/or a colleague are interested in following up with us after the event and becoming part of a smaller group of committed individuals who wish to explore specific opportunities to work together to support the health and wellbeing of our Community in Stockwell, please join us at-

Stockwell Forum– 3rd July 2019
The forum opened by highlighting the evening’s special focus on how we can work better together in our neighbourhood. We recapped on the dynamism and energy of recent meetings, including the new Stockwell Health & Wellbeing forum; the increasing drive towards neighbourhood and preventative working, particularly by the NHS; and a clear shared desire to connect and work together.
The forum members then introduced themselves, highlighting the many fantastic events, projects, forums, and partnerships they undertook and / or belonged to. There was a wide range of representation, including the new Stockwell Primary Care Network (made up of 5 local GP practices) now named StockWellBeing PCN, a coordinator and Parent Rep from the LEAP Stockwell Early Years Forum, the Lambeth Portuguese Wellbeing Partnership, and the Stockwell Health and Wellbeing Forum. There were also representatives from our local arts anchor organisation Art4Space, the Guys & St Thomas’ Charity, local pharmacies and a local private sector developer. Cllrs Lucy Caldicott and Mohammed Jaser were also present, alongside a council officer from the Lambeth Forum Network – as well as several residents from local estates and PPG networks.
In groups we discussed whether we wanted to see more collaborative working in the neighbourhood. During the feedback session, everyone agreed that there was a need for more collaboration, with the idea of uniting around the concept of a “Thriving Stockwell” (working title) to make this happen. Thriving Stockwell would act as a brand or a name that all living and working in Stockwell who wanted to come together to make a difference in Stockwell could unite under. The discussions highlighted several themes where a Thriving Stockwell could make a difference:
- individual action sparking activity
- the use of micro-budgets to support embryonic projects
- the need for collectivism and unconditional budgets
- cross-disciplinary project groups, co-working across Stockwell
- encouraging local business to create and sustain public meeting and recreation spaces
- spreading awareness of available funding across the neighbourhood and leveraging additional funding into the area
- desire to build a shared set of values and be open and inclusive to anyone in the area wanting to join
We then thought about how we might do this and what we could work on together to bring this to life and ensure it wasn’t just a talking shop. A range of exciting ideas emerged including:
- our unique opportunity to shape the new, neighbourhood-based NHS agenda
- bringing people from different backgrounds together around the Stockwell Christmas tree project
- holding a regular market in Stockwell Square, bringing to life the idea of the ‘Soul of Stockwell’
- bringing people together through an ESCA-led food and social event in the autumn
- building on the St Martin’s Day events, linked to the Portuguese community
- improving Stockwell’s air quality, building on funding from Lambeth Council
Overall, there was a unanimous desire to develop a shared vision and collaborate better for our neighbourhood. There was acknowledgment of challenges (e.g. bringing people together who currently live and work in ‘silos’, concern that this kind of collective approach has been ‘done before’) – and therefore of the need to build support (funding, ideas, time) from a wide range of people and organisations to overcome these challenges and make it happen.
Next steps? We will be meeting on Thursday 1st August 2019 at 3pm in Stockwell Community Centre to identify a core group of people who want to lead and drive this forward. At the meeting we will build on the discussion above and develop a short vision statement and proposal we can all use to spread the word and to generate opportunities for funding for Thriving Stockwell. Please encourage anyone with an interest to get involved.

The important thing now is how we build on the momentum and bring together some of the opportunities that were formulating on the night.

Stockwell Health & Wellbeing Forum- 27th February 2019
Our practice teamed up with other local GPs, the Stockwell Forum and the Lambeth Patient Participation Group (PPG) Network for an event on Wednesday 27th February 2019: Stockwell Health & Wellbeing Forum.
The great enthusiasm and creativity of residents and groups to improve wellbeing in Stockwell were evident at the Stockwell Forum. Nearly 50 people attended the event with its special focus on Health and Wellbeing in our neighbourhood.
Dr Toyne and our Practice Manager Sandra Connolly were at the event, along with 4 other local GP practices we are working with. Youth, Community, Arts, Schools and Education, Employment, and local residents were all represented – as well as Lambeth’s NHS Clinical Commissioning Group.
After an introduction on the health sector’s increasing focus on neighbourhood working and preventative work with communities by the Chair, Steve Griffin from Stockwell Partnership, the ice was properly broken by a fun drawing exercise run by local community arts group, Arts4Space. Attendees had to draw the person sitting next to them without looking at the paper. The facilitator showed how the process connected to the famous ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’.
There followed 12 short talks by local organisations supporting wellbeing, including Hyde Housing, Active Together, Respeito, Dr Vik Sharma (Grantham Practice / Lambeth Portuguese Wellbeing Partnership / Food Coop), Enterprise LDN, Big Kid Foundation, Oval Learning Cluster, TSIP, Healthwatch Lambeth and Linda Mills (Complementary Health).
Finally Sandra and Lambeth PPG Network explained how GP practices in the are were working differently to engage and work with each other, local services, community organisations and local people to improve Health and Wellbeing in Lambeth. They introduced a table discussion about how we can be more active and work together to create a healthy community in Stockwell. A huge number of ideas were generated. People commented on how great it was to have such a diverse group making connections; how people were not alone in wanting to make a difference to health and wellbeing; and above all how there was a need for more engagement, more online resources and more opportunities to connect in person.
There was also a time over tea and sandwiches for participants to network and speak to the GPs present. GP practices were able to share information on key issues including self-care, medicines waste and online access to GP services.
Many thanks to the event’s partners, especially Stockwell Forum. Partners included the local GP cluster (Beckett House Practice, Grantham Practice, Binfield Road Practice, Springfield Medical Centre and Stockwell Group Practice), Lambeth NHS CCG, Lambeth PPG, the Lambeth Portuguese Wellbeing Partnership, Art4Space and Lambeth Council. For more information, or to receive the summary of ideas that came out from the tables, contact Steve Griffin at Stockwell Partnership (steve@stockwell.org.uk).
Next steps? We will be emailing everyone to propose a follow-up meeting in the next month, where we can go into more detail on some of the fantastic ideas that came up in the forum.
If you would like to take an active part in any aspect of the forum or our Patient Group, including sharing any health and wellbeing projects you are involved in, please let us know HERE.
